Measuring staff productivity with data, not surveillance

Measuring staff productivity can slide into individual surveillance if done with the wrong tools. BEKÇİ AI's staff and SLA module tracks zone coverage, response times, and shift performance — anonymously and KVKK-compliant — to improve operations, not monitor individuals.

Measuring staff productivity is one of the most sensitive topics in retail operations. Done right, it helps managers allocate resources more effectively and raises service quality across the store. Done wrong, it slides into individual surveillance. BEKÇİ AI's staff and SLA module is built around this distinction: what is measured is the zone and the shift, not the individual.

Measurement vs. surveillance

Surveillance records individual movements at a personal level — who was where, for how long, how many times. Operational measurement uses aggregated data to understand how well the system is working. BEKÇİ AI takes the second path: which zone was uncovered during peak hours? Was the SLA response time met? Which shift saw the longest queues? These are questions about the operation, not the person.

Three core metrics

  • Zone coverage rate — the store is divided into defined zones. An anonymous presence signal answers 'was staff present in this zone at this time?' Cross-referenced with footfall data, this reveals which zones were understaffed during busy periods.
  • SLA response time — the time between customers waiting in a zone (e.g. a checkout queue building) and a staff member reaching that zone. Consistent misses point to resource, layout, or workflow issues.
  • Shift performance score — a composite at shift level, combining coverage rate, response times, and queue-related wait data. The goal is to understand when the operation runs more smoothly, not to rank individual employees.

KVKK compliance and anonymous design

BEKÇİ AI applies data-minimisation by design: no facial recognition, no personal data records, all metrics aggregated at zone and shift level only, all processing done on-premises (the continuous video stream does not leave the store). This significantly simplifies meeting Turkish data-protection (KVKK) transparency obligations. Legal assessment of lawful basis and employee notification remains the employer's responsibility.

Using the data responsibly

  • Frame results as operational signals, not performance verdicts — a low coverage rate is a scheduling or task-allocation input, not grounds for individual action.
  • Be transparent with staff about what is measured, how it is used, and who sees the reports.
  • Factor in context — seasonal peaks, deliveries, and unexpected footfall spikes all affect coverage and response times.
  • Work with team- and shift-level averages, not individual comparisons.
Summary / Action

The staff and SLA module measures zone coverage rate, SLA response time, and shift performance score — anonymously and KVKK-compliant. Zone and shift level analysis only: the goal is operational improvement, not individual monitoring. Can be deployed over your existing cameras.
